This has got to be the worst moving company in the country. They lied to me about everything. Quoted me a guaranteed price, which doubled.

These guys are crooks, plain and simple, showed up late for the move with some scroungy day laborers, tried to charge hidden fees on everything, actually delivered half my stuff 3 weeks late mostly broken.

Just a complete nightmare. When I complained, they actually threatened me. Absolutely the most outrageous, stereotypical bad moving company you could possibly hire. STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS!! TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!

I received a quote from Lightning Van Lines along with several other companies to move my belongings from Los Angeles to Dallas. I chose Lightning even though their quote was not the lowest because their customer service rep seemed knowledgeable and professional. They sent me a quote after going through a detailed inventory of my belongings over the phone. I did mention it was difficult to estimate the actual number of boxes but what told that wouldn't be an issue. I also told the rep that I probably have some miscellaneous items that I am forgetting but all the large items were accounted for. I moved from Tucson to Dallas a year and half ago and then from Dallas to Los Angeles last year using 2 different companies and the final weight charged from both companies was within 5% of the estimated weight determined by Lightning in the quote. They crew arrived on-time and had enough manpower to load my belongings quickly. The foreman walked through my apartment to match what I had versus the inventory. After the inventory we determined that I had 10 more boxes and a few other items: a vacuum cleaner, kitchen trash can, smaller plastic trash can, and my golf clubs. I was expecting that with the extra items the prices would increase accordingly. After his discussion with his management, my extra items took the estimated weight from 3073lbs to an estimated weight of 4500lbs. The price went from ~$1900 to ~$2700. This was a total scam. I have documentation of the weight from the prior 2 moves and I actually decided to not bring a few things with me. As I was moving out of state and needed to start my job the next week, they probably thought I would be willing to pay. I declined there service and am going to rent a truck and drive it myself.

I was so happy with my experience with Lightning van Lines. They moved me from California to NYC. The service and attention was top notch. They paid attention to every detail and made sure my moving experience from one side of the country to the other was as painless as possible. I hope I don't have to move again anytime soon but if I do I would use Lightning Van Lines.

I just wanted to share my gratitude with LightningVanLines for their help in arranging my move last weekend. I waited for more than 1-2 days only for quotes every time but this time I got the quote instantly. I called them up and without letting me to wait for long they gave me a perfect quote. The quote was reasonable and affordable. One more thing is that they knew exactly how many peoples are required for this move. No loitering and no laughing but a professional mover from California. It made a stressful situation like a move feel like a piece of cake. I will definitely recommend LightningVanLines to anyone I know who needs a moving company.

I went with Lighting van lines mostly based on price quoted. My items arent very exspensive and I did a good job packing but I was still nervous. The guys came and were very nice did a good job loading and seemed to be very professional. The delivery went just as well no surprises and on time. I thought I was picking a cheap moving company but it just turned out to be a great moving company at a cheap price.

The following is a letter I sent to Lightning Van Lines about ten minutes ago: I believe it says it all...

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing today in response to a telephone conversation I had with a representative from your office yesterday afternoon, 2/10/2010, at @ 4:00pm, about my upcoming move from downtown Los Angeles to West Hollywood.

I have decided to go with another company, and wanted to communicate to you why this decision was made. It wasn't about professional reputation. Overall, I see that your reviews online are positive and that there are very few complaints against your company from consumers. As your website announces, you're registered with all of the proper agencies and authorities, and seem to conduct yourselves as professionals, standing behind your work. It wasn't about price; the estimate I received was a few dollars lower than that which I received from competitors, including the company with which I ultimately decided to do business. Nor was it about scheduling; you were available at the exact times when I needed to have professionals present to accommodate my move.

My decision is almost wholly based on two comments made during the conversation, comments which seemed 'scripted' and part of the Lightning Van Lines telephone dialogue. The first was the comment that "three people will be dispatched for the job, and they'll be three English speaking movers". This was highly offensive to me for several reasons. First, it made the assumption that because my last name is ________ that I am not of Latin descent, which may or may not be the case... it presumed that English is my first language and not Spanish, which may or may not be the case. Most disturbingly, it implied that professionalism is tied into full English fluency amongst all employees, a subtly racist and wholly inappropriate comment to make. Certainly, I can see benefit in checking in for compatibility between customers' preferred language and languages spoken by employees, and in the case where a customer is monolingual English-speaking, at least one person on the crew needs to be conversant in that language. That's basic common sense. However, this was clearly not the message that was communicated to me.

The second comment made me cringe even more; the quote was that "We never use day laborers or illegals"... with the follow-up comment being that one of the reasons is because they "tend to drag out jobs to make more money". To say I was horrified at this point in the conversation would be an understatement. Firstly, again; an assumption. The assumption that I'm not a day laborer. The assumption that I'm not undocumented. The assumption that I'm an American citizen. The assumption that I have a preference for those who are. Secondly, the use of the highly pejorative and unprofessional term "illegals", a term which has been used to subjugate and marginalize tens of thousands of human beings, many of whose families are undergoing struggles and challenges that other more privileged families will never have to bear. Finally, the generalization that they "drag out jobs" is completely the opposite of my experience. As a clinician in Phoenix, Arizona I worked at an agency whose clientele were almost exclusively with people who worked without documentation in incredibly difficult jobs, often paid less than their worth and with no benefits. The implication that day laborers are lazy, inferring by default that documented immigrants and American citizens are harder working people... it's simply offensive to me beyond what words can express.

I will not be doing business with your company, and hope that this letter reaches someone who hears my message and doesn't discard it as an overly sensitive or as a political response to 'normal' comments which were made. I assure you, this is perhaps the third complaint letter I've written to a company in my life, and none of the other letters were about racial bias or discriminatory language. I'm not that person; however twenty-four hours after the conversation I find myself still bothered by it, and felt that I had to react in some way. I hope this letter is used to reconsider some of the scripts and messages put out into the public by your company. Who you hire is your decision, what you value in an employee, also a decision that you have to make. However, if I'm reacting this way, I highly doubt I'm alone, and wonder how many contracts you never wrote because of people hanging up the phone and feeling upset by the implicit and explicit messages it conveys.

I'm going with one of your competitors, and honestly feel much better about spending extra money for this move, as I feel that their treatment of people and respect for diversity is clearly superior to that communicated to me through your company's script.

Sincerely,

Customer service = great. Thank you for making me feel secure, that everything is alright and for stamping the BBB logo on your website also finishing off any doubts.
Delivery=SUCKS
BEWARE!!! I contracted with Lightning Vanlines for a move from Berkeley, CA to Chicago, IL. I spoke with them regularly on the phone about questions I had and how to prepare for the move. I labeled all my boxes and itemized what was inside, I gave a list to the company prior and they gave me a quote about how much of it would cost. On the day of the move -they try to jack up the price and it wasn't only until after I initiate and made some calls and got mad that they did not try to pull that trick. Super Annoying on the day you are moving!
Delivery=SUCKS I had all my stuff picked up on Jana

The absolute worst experience of our lives. Took 8 weeks to get our items delivered when we booked and they took our money we were told it would take 8-14 days for delivery.

There is Zero customer service and attitude when you call with a question and of course hidden charges for packing and weight and so on.

Save yourself the headaches and get a reputable moving company and stay away from these clowns.

My girlfriend and I relocated from Santa Barbara to Virginia. I thought I did a lot of research and found some positive reviews for this company and we chose them because their estimate was very low. We are not professional movers and I am assuming if you are reading this you aren't either. When the mover arrived he underestimated the amount of our load by a significant amount. In a way, not the company's fault but we tried to explain what we items we had to the best of our ability and the person quoting us on the phone didn't help us much in coming up with a realistic estimate.

When actually packing the contract states that they will wrap your items in blankets. Be very careful because that is not what needs to be done. You need to bubble wrap everything and pack them into boxes very solidly, because your items are going to be loaded and unloaded a couple times. A TV for example needs to be wrapped in a blanket or significant amount of bubble wrap then boxed up in order for Lighting to assume responsibility, so basically they insist that you pack your items this was. In short you need to spend a significant amount of time packing your items before you have them pick them up (Boxed Mattresses, Boxed paintings mirrors, boxed everything). We thought we did a good job and thought when the company wrapped the items in blankets that would be enough. Our experience is moving across town and that is what you need to do. This is not the case, it is necessary to package the items exceptionally well. Be careful, if Lightning does it for you, you will be charged very high fees, for example putting a Mattress in a box was about $75. All in all we were charged about $900 to pack. Once again not exactly Lightning's fault, but the fees were pretty ridiculous.

Working with the driver proved frustrating as well. They promised the items on Sunday then moved it to Monday, OK fine, it was still under the 14 days promised. Then on Monday there were more delays and instead of showing up between 11:30am 3:00pm as promised they showed up around 7:00pm - it's cold and dark in Virginia and not exactly how you want to spend your day, waiting is not fun. We live in a large apartment building so there were extra charges for the walk to the apartment, they do 50ft for free - 50 feet is NOT a long distance), then charge an additional $75 for each additional 50ft. Once again, it's in the contract so we should have known, but the 200ft walk cost us another $225 cash - so we added a trip to the ATM before they started unloading the truck.

Most of our stuff made it OK, so the packing was necessary. A couple things that were just wrapped in blankets were broken, but nothing major. We helped them unwrap the items because it was getting late, but the guys were OK helping out. We finally finished at 10:30 pm and at that point we had to deal with all the trash. They were willing to bring it downstairs but not dispose of it. I am not sure how many of you have dumpsters so keep this in mind.

All in all not a disaster but I would encourage you to look around and make sure you don't make the same mistakes we did.

Good luck
