We had to move our home and store our items in four 16' containers. Pricewise they were by far the cheapest and beat out all other quotes including Pods. Delivery was prompt and timely. The team they sent to load the containers were great. They packed those things so tight and worked tirelessly to get the job done all on the same day.
We stored all our worldly possessions with them for a month and then they redelivered and unloaded.

The Stamford CT branch is the one we dealt with. Nick, the Manager was not just a true professional but clearly cared and wanted to make our move as smooth as possible. We have 3 kids under 3yrs! and had to move on a specific date. Even when their forklift broke they managed to source new parts the same day and still get our stuff to us on time. The moving guys arrived promptly and unloaded with zero problems or fuss.

We have to give a special THANK YOU to RON the container truck driver. He was amazing.

We decided on Mayflower based mostly on reputation. After reading so many bad moving reviews we figured a few bucks more was worth not having all the issues. The move went well with Mayflower and we would use them again.

This was the worst experience ever. To start, getting a legitimate estimate was a total run around. I felt like I was being shook down by criminals. Their truck leaked and rain ruined 3 large and expensive pieces of furniture. Everything that wasn't packed in a box was completely trashed or suffered extensive damage. Now that we are in the claims process, we keep being put off. If this ever resolves itself to anything near my satisfaction, I will be complete amazed.

I recently used Mayflower's services to move from NYC to Austin, and let me tell you, it was the WORST experience of my life. I had paid A LOT of EXTRA MONEY to get my belongings to Austin on August 4th, which i signed a guaranteed contract, and it did not show up. When it didn't show up, I called into Mayflower, and they told me the earliest it would get there is August 11th. When were they planning on letting me know this? Why did I have to call them? I was out of town until August 15th, so clearly that would not work, and they told me I would have to PAY EXTRA FOR STORAGE UNTIL THE 15TH!!!!!!! What kind of company breaks guarantees and gouges their customers for extra money like this? A guarantee means GUARANTEED, 100%, so I'm pretty sure Mayflower has no idea what a guarantee is they just use the word to dupe customers. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED AND DISSATISFIED WITH MY MAYFLOWER EXPERIENCE AND I RECOMMEND YOU GO WITH ANOTHER MOVING COMPANY!

This was our second move using Mayflower and again it went great. I think if you can afford it going with the big boys always pays in the end.

Moving is a word that no one likes to think about. But, we had to move our household and our business from one state to another.

Deciding on a Moving Company

The first assignment was to line up a moving company. I learned that all of the moving companies were agents of the big boys, which is why you will normally see another name along with the big name on the moving van. I also learned quickly not to take estimates over the phone but to have the moving companies come out and physically look at both our business and our home belongings to give us their not to exceed quote in writing.

The price is based on weight, dimensions, and distance to where you are moving to.

Some moving companies would not pin point when we would receive our goods, while others did not want to be bothered by physically coming out to our home and business.

I asked a lot of questions and got the important answers in writing, signed by the agent.

Buying the Insurance or Not

Reading over the insurance that was automatically provided by the moving companies which is in the fine print, will not cover your belongings as you will see it goes by a certain amount of cents pound. Therefore, if you have a 40 pound object that is valued at $200 and the insurance is .40 per pound, you will received a whopping $16.

We bought the extra insurance not only because of an individual piece getting broken but if the whole truck got into an accident you would still only get the small amount of cents per pound without taking the additional insurance.

The Final Hiring

The quotes from all the moving companies varied greatly. I decided to go with the most accurate estimate that I read over and the most helpful agent, which was Mayflower.

Mayflower gave us an option whether for them to pack or us to pack. I chose for us to pack because not only is it cheaper, but I know I will pack it well and would know what box to tackle unpacking first.

Moving Day

Mayflower arrived in their big van at our business on time and loaded everything before going to our home. The workers came with stickers and inventory sheets. They placed a sticker on each object or box and placed it on their inventory sheet.

Our business had a lot of heavy machinery and fragile test equipment, but Mayflower got both places loaded in a day and took off at 4:30 in the afternoon to the nearest weigh station to get the weight of our belongings in writing which was part of what our price was based on. It did take the whole large semi-truck van for both of our places.

Arrival Day

We were informed that it would take them 3 days for the drive to our destination. They arrived exactly on time early in the morning at our home and had everything in our house by noon. The workers would ask us what room we wanted each item in if we hadn't marked the box or belonging already as such. Inspection was taken and nothing was broken.

Next they went immediately to our business building. After inspection, we discovered one office desk was chipped and they immediately wrote us a check to cover the damages of it.

Final Price

The final price of Mayflower was a few hundred lower than our estimate so that was really good news.

Final Thoughts

Our experience with Mayflower was excellent, thank goodness, because the move itself was enough to make one never want to move again.

I was glad that we bought the extra insurance because we noted that the movers seemed to be extra careful with our belongings (probably because they knew they would have to pay for damages) and the claim we did have was immediately resolved.

Happy moving to you and I hope you have as good as luck as we did.

Great Move With Mayflower/United,

We had to move a small 3 bedroom house worth of stuff (about 9500 pounds, as it turns out) from the SF Bay Area to Phoenix. We thought about doing it ourselves but the decently long distance plus the likelihood of heat in Phoenix turned our thoughts to professional movers.

We got quotes from 3 of the majors, and ended up going with Piedmont Moving Systems as agents for Mayflower (who are also known as Bartels Moving as agents for United, more on that in a minute.) We went with them largely on the strength of the salesperson, Scott. He took the time to explain things the best, it seemed like he was telling the truth (not everything was good news: our pressboard furniture wasn't covered even if we got full replacement valuation; 97% of moves have less than $300 damage, etc.)

Inspired by the move, we got rid of a BUNCH of stuff. So much so that we had Scott come back about 2 weeks before the move and he ended up doing a whole new quote. That took off about 3000 pounds and $1000.

He also ended up throwing in a bunch of (used) boxes, tape, and clean newsprint, which was perfect. We ended up needing only about 20 small boxes and a few mediums from u-haul.

Finally, we got a binding not-to-exceed estimate, which basically means that it wasn't going to cost us more than the estimate unless we added stuff the salesperson didn't see. That worked out for us, as we found out later that our load was about 700 pounds over the 8700 pound estimate. Not our problem!

We FREAKED OUT when we called them a few days before the move to confirm, and the logistics guy mentioned in passing that it would be a United truck. What? The salesperson went to all this trouble to tout Mayflower, and now we're being switched to United? However, with a bunch of research on the internet, we discovered that United and Mayflower are essentially the same company, in that they're both owned by Unigroup. Slowly, Mayflower is absorbing the United way of doing things. Anyway, sometimes agents move loads from one to the other to optimize scheduling or handle peak demand, etc. Making it slightly better was that the driver they'd assigned us had won driver of the year a couple times, had been driving for them for 10 years, etc. etc.

Stressed but undaunted, we awaited their arrival with nervous anticipation. The driver, Antonio called at 8am to let us know he might be a few minutes late due to traffic, he ended up arriving at 9:20 or so (original window was 8-9). Fine.

Unbelievably, the move went EXTREMELY WELL. Antonio was great, he ran the crews well, he helped us with this pressboard furniture that's a pain in the butt to move, the arrival and unload was on time, and we have yet to find anything that's damaged (except for one piece of the pressboard furniture damaged at the load before we concluded we needed to tear it all apart before moving; honestly, we expected much worse...)

Possible keys to success:
* We got the $0 deductible insurance. That way they were on the hook for everything. (Ok, not really everything, as any packed by owner box wasn't covered, but we packed pretty carefully, see below.) Not sure if this mattered or not, but we did it. Also it seems to me that you'd either do the $0 deductible or none at all as the price for the $250 and $500 was so close to the $0.
* We packed everything ourselves (except for TV's, furniture, and some other items that the salesperson said the movers would handle). We used lots of clean newsprint and packed carefully. Worked great - nothing broke! And the movers used a TON of furniture pads and tape to protect all the furniture, which worked well.
* We were absolutely ready when the movers got there. We asked the crew if that was standard and they said no - often families were in disarray and that would make it hard for them to work well.
* We provided water and soda (and M&M's) throughout, which everyone seemed to appreciate.
* We were definitely around for both the load and unload, which mattered a ton. For example, I remembered better than anyone how my desk fit together, so I helped put it back together. We also handled the checklist of inventory on unload (apparently other people leave that to the driver? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?)
* Lots of positive attitude and friendliness. It took a while for the guys to warm up, but by the end of both the load and unload everyone was smiling or at least friendly!

Other things:
* Driver is key, as they're independent contractors with a wide amount of flexibility and leeway to make decisions for or against you. Make them your friend!
* Be aware that they will pack that huge truck ALL the way to the TOP! That means that boxes not labeled top load might have 10' of other boxes, furniture, or whatever else on top of them. A couple of our boxes weren't packed as fully as they should have been and got a bit smushed; no harm done as it was all soft stuff (clothes, etc.)
* It's normal to tip drivers and crew; ours were so nice and friendly that we tipped $30ish for the crew members and about $140 for the driver...
* Antonio reflected that he prefers the United side of the United/Mayflower partnership.
* We took stuff that was precious to us (photo albums, some computer stuff, sentimental stuffed animals) with us in our cars so we wouldn't stress about them. In retrospect they would have been fine on the moving van but it made us feel better.
* The load was 7 hours, including a short lunch break. The unload was about 5.

Our seventh move was a charm. Previous moves were paid for by the company my husband worked for, so all the packing, moving, and unpacking was paid for.

Granted, this time, all we had to do was move across town. We packed our own small items and moved them into the house by the carload. We had two weeks to do this before the Mayflower truck came to our house to load the large furniture and heavy items.

Moving day was in mid April. We asked for three people to do the work. One decided what to move first. Another helped him take it out to the truck and the third one placed the items on the truck and carefully padded each piece of furniture with heavy pads. We found that if two people come with the truck, there is a lot of wasted time while one person protects the furniture and the other one waits until the second man can help move the furniture.

At our present home, the walks were wet and dirty from the winter thaw. The many trees on the property added to the debris on the driveway and walks. Without asking, the movers laid protective rugs and cloths over the floors of the house so that they would not track dirt and moisture inside.

They were very careful with all the breakables such as mirrors, glass table tops, and marble table inserts that they took out and moved separately. They did not put scratches on any of the wood surfaces and not one item was damaged in any way.

After the move, which is still a chore, we wrote the company a letter thanking them for the wonderful job they did. We would recommend this company to anyone. The cost was reasonable and they showed up on time.
They were very pleasant to work with and followed our suggestions on furniture placement. I cannot praise them too highly. Try them and see.

This company is totally professional in every aspect. The men looked and performed to our high standards which are not easy I admit. The only set back was the price but after reading some horror stories I am glad we spent the extra money.

If youre going to trust everything you have in life to a moving company better choose wisely!

I think it's safe to say going with a big name like mayflower might cost you a few bucks more but it sure out weights the risk of picking a rouge mover.
